MTG comics coming back in April 2021
This revelation was first announced back in late January, but if you haven’t had the time to keep up with all of the MTG updates coming out, keep on reading, because this is a pretty cool story. Have you ever noticed that games like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon have a variety of different adaptations and platforms out there? They have books, TV shows, video games and a lot more.
Unfortunately, MTG hasn’t really reached that level when it comes to expanding and introducing different things that go beyond just the card game. Of course, it hasn’t been for lack of trying. There have been numerous attempts to give MTG its own media platform/adaptation, but none have ever really panned out...until now!
Boom! Studios is prepared to bring the MTG comic series to life and succeed where all others failed. They are known for their work on other well-known comic series, such as Angel, Ben 10, Power Rangers, Rugrats, Robocop, Steven Universe, WWE and so many more. Those are just the ones that I’m familiar with. In fact, I can probably take up an entire page with the list of comics that they produce. So, their portfolio is impressive, to say the least.
I don’t want to presume or assume anything this early, but I think this new MTG series is in good hands with Boom! and their assortment of creative minds. We’ll see just how good of a judge I am in April. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being hopefully optimistic, do you?
Boom! and Wizards of the Coast came to an agreement on the series, which is set to be released sometime in April of 2021. The series itself will be called Magic and will run on a monthly basis. The last time we saw an MTG comic series was back in 2018, so it will be nice to have a fresh start and a new series after a long two-year hiatus.
Although, given the response to the last series, I think it was necessary for them to go back to the drawing board. And this break in the action has given them the perfect opportunity to come up with something that fans and newcomers alike can really sink their teeth into. Based on several confirmed reports, the series will begin in Ravnica and follow a trio of Guildmasters who must work together to seek retribution against a group of assassins that tried to kill them. It has come out that Ral Zarek, Vraska, and Kaya are the three Guilsmasters and that their quest for the assassins will take them all the way to the Zendikar.
For just a little background, these three Guildmasters have power over their own individual Ravnican guilds. Here’s the breakdown of who rules what:
These leadership positions make them prime targets for assassination. I know it may seem weird, especially since these three characters are so different, but they must put aside their differences, for now, and work as one to survive the treacherous terrain of Zendikar. By doing so, they will have a better chance of finding the characters responsible for the attempts on their lives.
MTG has been looking for that special something to help them refuel the franchise, and thanks to the creative minds on both sides, I think they’ve finally found it with this newest comic series! I’ve also heard rumors of an animated series coming to Netflix, but that’s for another blog! For now, let’s just be happy that they’re making another run at the comic book section. One step at a time!
Let me know your thoughts, opinions and expectations for this newest MTG comic series and whether you think it will have staying power this time around. Also, if you happen to hear any more confirmed details between now and April, be sure to list them in the comments below as well.
Until we meet again,
Vince the Prince
