MTG has Fortnite and Street Fighter cards coming in 2022
Street Fighter and Fortnite have been a fan favorite in the gaming community since the day they dropped, and I predict that they will remain so once they take their place in MTG lore. MTG has introduced cards from Godzilla, Lord of the Rings, and even The Walking Dead in the past, which have proven to be successful, but I think they’re primed to outdo themselves with these new card set themes coming in 2022.
Like the Lord of the Rings and Warhammer crossovers that we covered not so long ago, these two will be a part of MTG’s Secret Lair subset. In what follows, I’ll briefly detail what we know about both upcoming subsets so far and what we can expect from each of them. After that, I’ll leave it up to you to sound off on what your expectations are and whether or not you’re as psyched for these crossovers as I am.
This info was revealed last week at the Magic Showcase event. With those other notable crossover sets (Lord of the Rings and Warhammer) set to come out any day/week now, this recent announcement has given the MTG community even more to look forward to. Since the two Fortnite and Street Fighter crossovers are set for 2022, it comes as no surprise that we haven’t been given an official date yet. So, for now, we just will have to make do with the info we’ve been given, and hope the calendar continues to move quickly.
Both crossover sets are going to be a part of Wizards’ Secret Lair drop. That means we can expect limited-time-only prints, which will quickly run out given their potential to become rare collector’s pieces in the future. That is if the crossovers are as popular as many expect them to be. With that said, let’s do a little breakdown of what we can expect from each set. We’ll jump into what we know about Fortnite first.
According to WOTC, the Fortnite crossover will feature two dual sets, each of which will be themed around iconic locations and characters found in Fortnite. With so many people and places in both categories, I can only imagine what they’ll come up with. It’s also been reported that the set will include some reprint cards. So, refreshed art and names for already existing cards will play a part in this crossover as well.
The Street Fighter crossover, on the other hand, has a bit more info attached to it. Apparently, this set will come with cards that have specific mechanics, which are based on some of the characters, themes, and combat moves that we’ve seen in the actual gameplay. I assume that means we can expect to see a lot of super punch and kick combos attached to some of our favorite fighters. I’ve heard Chun Li’s card will have a nice Multikicker mechanic attached to it.
One other thing to note is that this Street Fighter crossover comes at a perfect time for Street Fighter since 2022 is their 35th Anniversary, which they are planning to celebrate when the calendar changes. I think it’s fair to assume that this milestone will make this set even more special and desirable among Street Fighter. That and the fact that it will be in the Secret Lair.
As I said in the beginning, I would like to hear some of your thoughts and ideas about this upcoming crossover and whether you think it will be as big as I hope it will be. Let me know in the comments below
Until we meet again,
