The Weekly Wave
Welcome back to the Weekly Wave! Let’s see what news, updates, and announcements have risen to the surface this week!
Netflix launches video game streaming test!
We actually covered this story in a blog a while back, and it’s pretty cool to see it finally come to fruition. Netflix has been looking to enter the video game world for quite some time by offering streams to their subscribers. Obviously, with companies like Sony and Microsoft ruling the realm, Netflix has plenty of competition and is hoping to work out any kinks in the early stages. That’s why this first beta test is so important.
It was announced earlier this week that Netflix will be testing its new video game streaming service for a select number of subscribers in the U.K. and Canada. This beta is also only available on TVs at the moment, but will become available on PCs and Macs in the next month or so. We can assume that mobile platforms will follow as well… if all goes well.
Speaking of mobile, players can actually use their phones as controllers to play the two games that are being used specifically for this test. Those two games are Oxenfree from Night School Studio (a Netflix Studio) and Molehew's Mining Adventure. The Netflix mobile video game controller can be downloaded from the App Store.
In addition to only being available to a select few in the U.K. and Canada, Netflix has also made the beta active on a handful of supported TVs such as Amazon Fire TV streaming media players, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, Nvidia Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung smart TVs, and Walmart ONN. More devices will be added to the list soon.
We’re going to keep our eye on this beta as it develops and see if any reviews come through. Who knows, if this initial test gets the nod from enough users, Netflix may just play its way to the top and give Sony and Microsoft something to think about. We’ll see.
Pokémon Paradox!
Did you happen to catch the announcement that was made at this year’s Pokémon World Championship in Japan? If not, it’s cool, that’s what this Weekly Wave newsletter is for! During the event, Pokémon featured a trailer introducing the next expansion that’s coming out, and fans can’t get enough of it. The expansion is called Paradox Rift!
The trailer briefly teased how Paradox will be turned into a TCG and will represent some of the different variants (Ancient and Future) from Scarlet and Violet. The cards featured in this expansion will have fresh artwork that has already been praised by fans. Let’s just say it looks like Pokémon invested a great deal of time in creating these cards and really focused on the details.
The mechanics for both variants will also be more engaging for players, as they will call for more strategic ways to battle, especially when it comes to each card's unique abilities. The Ancient cards will have a more historic, throwback look, while the Future cards will be more modernized.
It’s worth noting that these Pokémon Paradox cards will be released in Japan first on October 27, 2023. After that, players from other regions can expect to have them sometime in November, so we won’t be far behind the Japanese release. Until then, we suggest that you check out the trailer for this expansion, if you haven’t already, and get a good look at what’s coming.
